Burwell Qualifies Nine for State Wrestling & Locks up District Championship

The Burwell Longhorn wrestlers gave an outstanding team effort to clinch the D2 District Championship at Shelby-Rising City High School over the weekend. In doing so, they qualified nine for the state tournament in Omaha. The Longhorns bested the runner-up team, the Plainview Pirates, with their 171.5 points to Plainview's 140 points for a resounding win in which all team members contributed.

At 106 lbs, Brody Jensen brought home a 1st place medal. At 113 lbs, Holden Hodges placed 4th and Colten Patrick wrestled hard before going out in the 3rd round consolations. At 120 lbs, Ora Chaffin wrestled hard, barely missing out with a loss in the consolation semi finals. Drew Dawe wrestled at 126 lbs, bringing home a 3rd place medal. Freshman, Kolton Thoene qualified for state at 132 lbs with a 4th place finish as did Cort Buss at 144 lbs. At 150 lbs, Garrett Hasenauer also barely missed state with a loss in the consolation semi finals. Trentin Brown wrestled a tough bracket at 165 lbs, going out in the third round of consolations. Kason Larson did a great job at 175 lbs, also going out in the 3rd round consolations. Cale Buss brought home a runner-up medal at 190 lbs. Two Longhorns placed at 215 lbs--Cy Feeken was 4th and senior, Hagen Hodges, was third.

The Longhorns will leave for Omaha on Wednesday, February 14th for their first session (session 2) at the CHI Center, with the tournament continuing through Saturday, February 17th. Good luck, Longhorns! Bring home the gold!
