April 3, 2013 – Burwell Nebraska – Burwell Public Schools student Cecelia Carson has been selected as a winner of the 2013 Nebraska NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing. The award, sponsored by Microsoft, Motorola Solutions Foundation, and the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT), recognizes young high school women for their computing-related achievements and interests as part of an effort to encourage more young women to choose careers in technology.
A total of eight award-winners and four runners up were selected from high schools across the Nebraska for their outstanding aptitude and interest in information technology and computing, solid leadership ability, good academic history, and plans for post-secondary education.
Each award-winner will receive an engraved award and gifts from financial sponsors and local organizations. Each runner up will receive a certificate and gifts from financial sponsors and local organizations. The University of Nebraska College of Information Science & Technology, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska, Woodmen of the World, and The Interpublic Group are sponsoring the event.
“Encouraging young women’s interest in technology careers is critical: our workforce needs their creativity and their innovation,” said Lucy Sanders, CEO and Co-founder of NCWIT.
“Burwell Jr. Sr. High School is proud that one of its own students received this prestigious award and continues to offer computing as part of its curriculum, recognizing its value to students’ future success,” commented BPS Principal, David Owen. Burwell Public Schools recognizes the importance of technology in today’s society and has implemented a 1 to 1 computer initiative that provides laptops to all Juniors and Seniors. Additionally, during her Senior year at Burwell Public Schools, Cecelia has participated in TECHS which is a year-long course designed for students in grades 10-12 who have a strong interest in technology for personal and vocational use.
NCWIT is the National Center for Women & Information Technology, a coalition of over 300 prominent corporations, academic institutions, government agencies, and nonprofits working to increase women's participation in IT.
