The ACT measures the college preparedness of high school graduates. Not all students take the ACT. In Nebraska last year, 16,581 students took the ACT and their average composite score was 22.0. The national average was 21.0.
Twenty-six BHS students in the class of 2012 took the ACT. The average score of the twenty-six seniors who took the ACT was 23.3. Four main areas are tested on the ACT: English, Mathematics, Reading and Science. Below are the average scores of each area.
English 23.3 (State average 21.8)
Mathematics 22.2 (State average 21.7)
Reading 24.2 (State average 22.3)
Science 22.8 (State average 21.9)
The ACT provides students with a set of test scores that gives them an idea of where they academically sit prior to making educational decisions about their future. The ACT does not measure intangible qualities that often separate the high achieving students. Qualities such as work ethic, time management, and perseverance cannot be measured by a single test, therefore, it must be emphasized that the ACT is one test.
