Proposed Health and PE Standards Questions and Concerns

May 10, 2021

There are starting to be questions asked and concerns expressed regarding the proposed health and PE standards by NDE. The main concerns lie in the strand of the standards that touch on difficult issues related to human growth and development. Burwell Public Schools wants to assure our stakeholders of the following:

a) The State Board of Education and NDE are taking input on the PROPOSED standards. It is highly likely that the standards will be revised again before the State Board votes to approve or not in the fall of 2021. This means districts would most likely not implement anything new for health and PE standards until perhaps the 2022-23 school year.

b) Burwell Public Schools supports the use of appropriate standards related to health and PE for our students. The proposed health and PE standards by the State Board and NDE are not required to be adopted by any school district. Each local Board of Education can decide whether or not to adopt the health and PE standards. Once the NDE makes the decision to adopt their Health Standards, Burwell Public Schools will work within its school district, Local Board and community to determine its own set of health and PE standards to ensure our students receive an appropriate health education through a locally adopted and accepted curriculum.

c) If anyone has questions regarding this topic, please contact the Superintendent’s office. Mr. Max would be happy to visit with you. One can also access a wealth of information by visiting the Nebraska Department of Education’s Website.
