Nebraska Safety Center and Local Schools Cooperate to Offer Driver Education

February 25, 2020

Update:

Currently, the Nebraska Safety Center is planning to hold summer driver’s education classes. We are looking into other options besides in-person classes but nothing has been finalized yet. Refunds will be available to students if they decide to cancel their enrollment, however, please allow 4-6 weeks for the refund to be processed and returned to them. The Nebraska DMV is still issuing first-time driving permits at certain locations. Students should go to dmv.nebraska.gov to see what locations are issuing permits and if an appointment is required. Students do not need to get their first permit from the DMV in the county they reside in, any Nebraska DMV will issue permits. We will keep you informed as new information becomes available. Thank you for your understanding.

The Nebraska Safety Center at the University of Nebraska at Kearney and local schools have teamed up to offer Driver Education during the 2020 calendar year.  The NSC will provide Driver Education to Burwell High School students for the cost of $330 per student. It consists of parent and student orientation, classroom instruction, slow-speed driving exercises on the NSC driving range, and on-street driving with a certified instructor.

The NSC requires a minimum of 8 students in order to hold the class, which may consist of students from the surrounding areas. The class will be in conjunction with Sargent High School and Loup County High School. The class will be held at Sargent High School.

A brochure and registration form for the school to copy and distribute, will be sent separately after receipt of the signed agreement by the NSC. The NSC will process student registrations. A student and parent orientation will be scheduled at the beginning of the first class session.

Session 1: Classroom-Monday, July 6-Thursday, July 9 from 8 am to 12:30 pm

Range exercises in Kearney: Friday, July 10 from 9 am to 5:30 pm.

*Scheduling for on-street driving and testing will be arranged by the instructor for outside of classroom times and will be conducted in the local

                     school area.

The NSC will provide the on-street vehicle and fuel, classroom materials, and the use of the Cope Driving Range; as well as set-up and instruction of Range exercises. No on-street interstate lesson will be taught while in Kearney. The transportation of students to and from the classroom facility, and the Cope Driving Range in Kearney will be the responsibility of the students' parents/guardians.

If students or parents are interested in more information or wish to register they may contact the UNK Nebraska Safety Center, 1917 W. 24th Street, Kearney, NE 68849, (308) 865-8256.
